With e-invoicing enforcement for Nigeria's medium taxpayers about three months away, Pronalytics, a System Integrator accredited by the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS), is urging businesses to choose their integration partner now and to check that partner's accreditation and data-protection credentials before handing over invoice data.
Medium taxpayers, those with annual turnover between N1
billion and N5 billion, went live on the NRS Merchant Buyer Solution (MBS)
platform on 1 July 2026. Compliance enforcement for the group is scheduled for
January to March 2027, according to the NRS implementation timeline published
in February.
"Compliance is not just about knowing what the
requirement is. Businesses need to be crystal clear on how they are actually
going to operationalise it," said Pero Ositelu, Co-Founder & VP
Pronalytics.
The cost of getting it wrong is high. Under Section 104 of
the Nigeria Tax Administration Act, a business that fails to process a taxable
invoice through the MBS platform faces a penalty of N200,000 per invoice, plus
100 per cent of the VAT due and interest at two percentage points above the
Central Bank of Nigeria's Monetary Policy Rate.
Buyers also lose out. An invoice without an Invoice
Reference Number (IRN) from the MBS platform cannot support an input VAT claim,
giving customers a direct reason to favour suppliers whose invoices are
validated.
The NRS has already moved to enforcement for large taxpayers, those with turnover above N5 billion, after their 31 July 2026 compliance deadline passed.
On 14 October, the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) urged the NRS to grant a six-month penalty-free transition, warning that inadequate system readiness could expose medium-sized firms to penalties.
Pronalytics says the safest response is to act early, and to treat the choice of integrator as a data decision as much as a technology one.
A System Integrator sits between a company's accounting or
ERP system and the NRS platform, converting and validating every invoice the
business issues. That means it handles buyer and seller details, invoice
values, and other tax-related commercial records.
For that reason, the role is tightly regulated. The National
Regulatory Guideline for Electronic Invoicing in Nigeria, issued by the
National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) with the NRS, states
that no entity may operate as a System Integrator without prior NITDA
accreditation.
The guideline requires System Integrators to show evidence
of compliance with the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023. It also requires
invoice data to be encrypted and stored or backed up on servers or data centres
in Nigeria, and the integrator's software to be tested by a licensed software
quality assurance firm.
Pronalytics advises businesses to confirm three things
before signing with any provider: that it holds current accreditation, that it
can show how it protects and where it stores invoice data, and that it can
support the business through enforcement and beyond.
Accredited System Integrators are listed on the NRS MBS
service providers directory, where businesses can verify a provider before
engaging it. Pronalytics is listed on the directory.
The company has built its own data controls into how it
deploys. Bob Nzelu, Co-founder & Chief Technology Officer of Pronalytics,
said consumer sales should carry only the information required, so customers'
personal details stay out of submissions where they are not needed.
For organisations with strict data-sovereignty requirements,
Pronalytics licenses its platform to run inside the client's own environment,
so invoice data does not pass through a third party before reaching the NRS.
Pronalytics delivers these services through TaxAnchor360,
its platform for NRS e-invoicing, tax intelligence and Central Bank of Nigeria
compliance. The platform validates invoices before submission, flags missing
information and retries failed transmissions, so errors are fixed before they
become penalties.
Demand for accredited providers is rising faster than supply
as more businesses come under the mandate. Pronalytics says firms that wait
until the enforcement window opens risk competing for limited implementation
capacity.
Emerging taxpayers, with turnover below N1 billion, are
next. They are scheduled to go live in July 2027, with enforcement planned for
January to March 2028.
The NRS has said its timelines are indicative and subject to
adjustment.
